In vitro methods for preservation of potato breeding and seed production initial material
2000
Kotkas, K. (Estonian Agricultural Univ., Tartu (Estonia). Plant Biotechnological Research Centre EVIKA)
The two major in vitro storage strategies for potato genetic resources are slow growth and cryopreservation. In Research Center EVIKA we are preserving potato varieties as meristem plants in vitro. The oldest meristemplants were induced in 1977. The aim of our research was to study factors and possibilities how to prolong the multiplication period in vitro. The influence of different components of medium, light and temperature condition on regeneration of plants in vitro and quality was studied. Under field conditions the influence of longterm preservation on the morphological characteristics of varieties was examined
