The intake of silage prepared of different grass

On the experimental farm at Eerika comparative trials with dairy cows were carried out in order to study the intake of silages of differnt grass. Graminaceous-rich silage and alfalfa silage were fed ad libitum. According to the metabolizable energy need of the trial cows, concentrate (consisting of barley meal and sunflower or soybean oil meal in the quantity the average protein content of the ration was at least 15 per cent) was fed 25, 40, 55 or 70 per cent of their energy need. With concentrate the cows ate graminaceous-rich silage dry matter 17.3...19.7 kg and alfalfa silage dry matter 17.0...17.2 kg per day. Each additional kg of concentrate dry matter in the ration decreased the silage dry matter intake by 0.5 kg in the case of graminaceous-rich silage and by up to 1.02 kg in the case of alfalfa silage
