Antimicrobial resistance

Antibiotics are used in the treatment and control of many types of infections in a wide variety of animal species. This use can lead to the selection of resistant forms of micro-organisms to antibiotics, which is a natural and unavoidable phenomenon. It is an inherent risk associated with the use of antibiotics in any species, including man. Resistant bacteria in animals, caused by the use of antibiotics in livestock, might be transferred to humans in one way or another. Those resistant bacteria might themselves be a human health threat or they might transfer their resistance to other bacteria. Virulent resistant strains might cause illness not easily treated by known antibiotics. The development of resistance can be minimised provided that a number of measures are observed to prolong the useful life of all antibiotics in both human and veterinary medicine. Antibiotic use should be limited to situation where they are needed and the selection of the right antibiotic should take into account a number of factors
