In 1866, Tartu Veterinary Institute found Trichinella larvae in the muscles of two cats the first time. The first cases of human trichinellosis were registered in the province Livomia in 1878 and 1881. Whether the cases occurred on the present territories of Estonia or Latvia is unknown. In 1999, the first case of human trichinellosis was diagnosed, the source of which was the domestic pig. Three Trichinella species have been identified in Estonia: T.nativa, T.britovi and T.spiralis. T.nativa and T.britovi have been identified in wild animals, T.spiralis in a brown rat on a furanimal farm and in a domestic pig on a small private farm. In 1994, a domestic pig was found infected with T.britovi. Trichinellosis is widespread among wild animals in Estonia. The most important natural reservoirs of Trichinella invasion are the racoon dogs, wolves, red foxes and rats. The source of human trichinellosis infection was the meat from wild animals and domestic pig consumed without any previous veterinary examination
