In France suckling cows number more than 4,000,000. At the moment, the number of suckling cows for the selection in three French beef breeds (Charolais, Limousin, Blonde d'Aquataine) is: 160,000, 90,000 and 50,000 respectively. The aim of this review article was ti present the principles and results of the Animal Model (IBOVAL 97) for Charolais, Limousin, and Blonde d'Aquataine bulls in France. The breeding value (BV) of beef bulls was estimated based on farm performance (birth weight: BW, weaning weight: WW, muscular development: MD and skeletal development: SD using a model for one or two traits.
