Human rabies in Hungary from 1950 onwards
1998
Lontai, I.
The national control system against domestic rabies was restored, after a period of post-war disorder, at the beginning of the 1950's. Consequently, there were only two endemic (in 1951 and in 1967) and one imported case (in 1978) between 1951 and 1984. Since 1985, 5 human rabies cases occured: one from a fox in county Somogy and four from cats from the north-eastern part of Hungary, none of which received post-exposure prophylaxis. In two cases, the cats'brain material proved repeatedly negative both with immunofluorescence and also in the mouse inoculation test.
