In 1997, Charolais cows aged 4-15 years on autumn pasture were examined in two seedstock herds (herd A: n=44; herd B: n=99). The average body weight (BW) was 551 kg in herd A, and 640 kg in herd B. Body measurements (height at winter, HW, A: 128.6 cm; B: 132.9 cm; chest girth, CG, A: 188.2 cm; B: 200.5 cm; slanting body length, SBL, A: 169.9 cm; B: 176.3 cm) of the cows were taken. We observed similar body condition scores by the French method in both herds (BCS, A: 1.46 score; B: 1.44 score). Differences between groups in age of cows were only significant in herd B. The average value of HW for 4-5 years was significantly (P0.05) higher than the result of the oldest (14-15) cows.
