This paper presents summariezed results of the three field experiments carried out during the 1997-1999 period at the Vezaiciai Branch of the Lithuanian Institute of Agriculture on a moderately podzolized sod podzolic light loam soil. Liming of soil arable layer had an essential effect on the agrochemical properties of soil. Liming reduced soil hydrolytic and exchange acidity and the amount of mobile Al and increased soil base saturation. Primary liming in spring had a small influence on barley yield, although grain yield increased 2.1-3.4 times as compared with the unlimed treatment. The grain yield was low (1.09-2.88 t/ha) due to the toxicy of mobile Al during barley emergence. Placement fertilization was the most effective in unlimed soils were a significant yield increase of 0.60 t/ha was obtained
