[Construction and exploitation of melioration systems in Latvia]

Land melioration work in Latvia beginning with the 17th century is reviewed. Particular attention is paid to the period after the WWII when melioration construction organizations and drainage system management services were established. Land draining carried out in the 1960ies-70ies, the production of drain pipes at plants "Lode", "Kuprava" and "Usma" started in 1965, as well as the construction of important hydrotechnical objects such as the Lubana lake dam are described. The role of LUA Hydromelioration Faculty in training qualified specialists-engineers for that branch is emphasized. Melioration problems after the privatization of State regional melioration enterprises (1993-1997) are discussed. The main tasks of melioration organizations for the nearests future are stated.
