Every year large amounts of seaweeds, generally Fucus vesiculosus, are washed out on the Jurmala beach making it less attractive to summer visitors, and the municipality must pay additional expenses to collect the waste and transport it to the landfills. The aim of the present project was to determine the chemical and physical properties of seaweeds as a possible effective organic fertilizer. The concentration of potassium, magnesium and heavy metals in seaweeds was determined and compared with that in other organic fertilizers. The investigation results show that seaweeds are a good fertilizer with properties similar to dung.
