The characteristic traits of the Lithuanian White pig breed - the main local pig breed in Lithuania - are explained. The foreign pig breeds raised at the pig breeding centres in Lithuania are described. Two selection methods used for the improvement of carcass traits of Lithuanian White pigs are discussed. The present study carried out in 1996-98 was designed to analyse the data on leanness obtained ultrasonically by means of Piglog 105 and to determine the efficiency of the method for the selection of pigs. The average lean meat content was determined for pure-bred Lithuanian White pigs and compared with that of most widely used foreign pig breeds for selection in Lithuania.
