Improvement in tapping of Philippine Canarium trees for Manila elemi

Four tapping lengths (10,15, 25, and 35 cm) and four levels of aqueous sulfuric acid treatments (0 percent, 15 percent, 35 percent, and 45 percent) were used on 32 Canarium trees to test their effects on resin yield. The influence of rainfall on resin yield was also tested for a 12-month tapping period. Tapping length had a significant effect on resin yield with 15 cm giving the highest average monthly yield in a year, averaging 2.52 kg/tree and ranging as high as 3.8 kg. Tapping should be prohibited at the start of the rainy season (end of May to July) when Canarium trees start to shed their leaves because of the minimal and poor quality of resins produced. Sixty percent of the total resin yield was collected during the seventh-month period of minimum rainfal (April-May, July-August, 1994; and January-March 1995) with an average monthly yield/tree of 0.12 plus or minus 0.03 kg. The remaining 40 percent was collected during the 5-month period of maximum rainfall (June, September-December 1994) with an average monthly yield of 0.11 plus or minus 0.03 kg. Acid concentrations did not significantly affect resin yield in this study, nor was there an interaction evident between tapping length, rainfall, and acid concentrations with the small number sampled in the study.
