Effective rainfall at various probabilities of exceedance for rice and corn production based on synoptic stations in Luzon [Philippines]: a simulation study

The fifteen provinces [of the Philippines] previously have adequate effective rainfall suffice to meet the crop water requirements for rice and corn production at the onset of planting period starting May to July. The Daily Soil Moisture Balance (DSMB) method is more effective than the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation (USBR) method in determining effective rainfall. This findings also support the comparison of Dastane (1974) for the relative merits of different methods wherein the accuracy of determining effective rainfall is very high for DSMB while USBR is low. The best cropping calendar for rice and corn production for the fifteen provinces with expected 100 percent water satisfaction and no recorded reduction on yield starts in the month of May until July with expected time of harvest from Sept to Nov. Likewise, the peak months for land preparation are May to June. Rice production is possible for at most two consecutive planting seasons for all the fifteen provinces with the exception where rainfall is inadequate during dry season. Equally possible is corn production at most two consecutive planting seasons for the fifteen provinces, inadequate rainfall during the dry season. For rice production, irrigation water is required for the month starting Dec to Jan. For corn production, irrigation water is required for the month of Dec in Ilocos Norte and Ilocos Sur; Jan in Metro Manila; Jan to Feb to Cagayan (Tuguegarao), in order to sustain the moisture requirement of rice and corn until ripening stage
