Five dominant agarophytes (Gracilaria coronopifolia, G. eucheumoides, G. salicornia, Laurencia flexilis, and Gelidiella acerosa) were collected from Ilocos Norte from Oct 1991 to Aug 1992 to determine the seasonal variation of yield and quality of agar from various species of agarophytes; evaluate and assess the physico-chemical qualities of the agar; correlate seasonal variation with agar quality; develop products and test purified agar extracts as culture media for microorganisms. Minimal foreign materials interfere in the agar extraction. Highest yield was registered from G. coronopifolia (Station 1 30 percent in April; Station 2 29 percent in March; Station 3 23 percent in July and Station 4 28 percent in April), while Station 5 registered G. eucheumoides at 25 percent in April. Agar yield could be attributed to the stage and development of the seaweeds. G. acerosa had the highest gel strength in all stations while G. coronopifolia the lowest. Viscosity of agar points L. flexilis to be the highest while G. coronopifolia the lowest. Sulfate content of agar indicate L. flexilis and G. coronopifolia to have high values while G. acerosa to have the least. G. salicornia, G. acerosa and G. eucheumoides have high values in 3, 6 an hydro-galactose while minimal values was registered by G. coronopifolia. High ash content features L. flexilis while G. acerosa the least. Gelling temperature of L. flexilis was noted to be highest, conversely, G. coronopifolia the lowest. On the other hand, melting temperature of agar from G. acerosa was noted to be the highest while G. eucheumoides the lowest Significant correlation betweeen yield and physico-chemical properties of extracted sugar were observed among the agar extracts. Biophysico-chemical factors were significantly related to yield. Minimal microbial counts were noted in examination of the agar. Purified agar extracts from agarophytes could be used as a culture media for selected microorganisms
