Biological availability of phosphorus from locally manufactured tricalcium phosphate

A five-week broiler feeding trial was conducted to determine the relative biological availability of phosphorus from locally manufactured tricalcium phosphate (TCP); assess the effect of the source and level of phosphorus supplementation on growth and bone parameters; and present a cost analysis on the use of TCP and monodicalcium phosphate (MDCP). The feeding trial used diets suplemented with 0.25 percent, 0.30 percent and 0.35 percent phosphorus from MDCP and TCP to 144 7-day old chicks randomly distributed to 24 rearing battery cages following a 2 x 3 factorial arrangement. Broilers fed TCP supplemented diets had lower (P less than 0.01) body weight, body weight gain, feed efficiency, bone parameters and numerically lower income over feed and chick cost. The 0.30 percent phosphorus supplementation level increased (P less than 0.05) tibia bone calcium and phosphorus. There was no interaction between source and level of phosphorus in all the growth and bone parameters of broilers. Using MDCP as reference phosphate, the relative biological availability of phosphorus from TCP considering all criteria of response was 94.09 percent. Using tibia bone ash as main response criterion, TCP had relative biological availability of phosphorus of 95.27 percent. The net availability of phosphorus from MDCP and TCP was 7.86 percent and 4.28 percent based on percent tibia bone phosphorus, respectively
