Tobacco as a cash crop: its contributions to agricultural modernization

This paper presents tobacco as a cash crop as it relates to agricultural modernization, and an updated socio-economic profile of the Philippine tobacco industry. Data and information were taken from results of various research and operations' programs and projects of the NTA [National Tobacco Administration]. Both qualitative and quantitative methods were used in the analysis. Results show that tobacco is an important agricultural cash crop particularly for farmers with small farm sizes. It has raised, farmers' income levels and equalized income distribution in tobacco growing communities. While tobacco is commercially grown primarily for the manufacture of cigar and cigarettes, research shows that it is a plant of manifold industrial uses. Commercially grown in 21 provinces, particularly Regions 1 and 2 [Ilocos and Cagayan Valley] in the country, covering approximately 45,000 hectares and involving 75,000 farmers, tobacco contributes a sizeable amount to the economy. To date, the tobacco industry generates an average annual revenue of P21.4 billion to the government
