Four 30-day and two 45-day old piglets were used to evaluate the effects of age on the morphological appearances of the stomach and small intestine. The development of the digestive tract of the native piglets was studied with particular reference to maturation during the pre-weaning period. In the stomach, a gradual increase in depth of the gastric pits was observed with the 45-day old native piglets, while cell type lining the epithelia of the gastric glands of 30-day old shows essentially the same features as that of 45-day old except for the difference in number and size. The marked increase in th depth of the gastric pits indicate the rapid production of cells in this area as more cells will line the greater depth of the pits. As lining cells are exfoliated from the surface, they are replaced by luminal migration of cells from the gastric pits. This indicates that rapid cell renewal in 45-day old animal resulted to the increase in depth of the gastric pits. In the small intestine, a considerable increase in crypt depth and villus height occurred with age. The increase in depth, indicates the rapid rate of cell production in the crypts of Lieberkuhn as additional cells were continually recruited to the crypt epithelium causing it to elongate. The increase in cell production in the crypts of Lieberkuhn of the 45-day animal provides the explanation for the considerable increase in height of its villus since more epithelial cells will move up at its surface. The increase in height of the villus in 45-day old native piglet indicates its greater absorption capacity with that of 30-day old animal. The increase in villus height and the accompanying increase in the complexity of the villus demonstrate the morphological changes happening in the small intestine during this period of life which is of great importance to the survival of the neonates as they approach the adult life
