Motorized bangkas [fishing boats] and social relations in Marinduque [Philippines]
2000
Watari, J. (Komazawa Women's Univ., Tokyo (Japan). Dept. of Liberal Arts)
It is difficult to describe fisherfolks' lives apart from the seas and its resources. It follows that how a fisherman manages his surroundings reveals his values and defines his relationship with others. This study focuses on Barangay [village] Pingan, in the southwest corner of the island of Marinduque and the role of motorized bangkas used by the local population. Three issues are discussed: the possession of fishing boats and its impact on the social status of the boat owners in their villages; motorization of fishing boats and introduction of new skills/techniques and the impact of these developments on the fishing village and peoples' sense of value
