Stock assessment of finfish fry in La Union [Philippines]
1999
Junio, A.B. (Don Mariano Marcos Memorial State Univ., NLUC Paraoir, Balaoan, La Union (Philippines). Fisheries Research and Training Inst.)
The study was conducted to identify the commercially important finfish fry caught in La Union [Philippines]; determine the seasonality, distribution, and abundance of the fry; and correlate the water parameters with the occurrence and abundance of the fry. Five area stations were identified as sampling sites. These were Darigayos, Luna, Paraoir, Balaoan, Paratong, Bacnotan, Carlatin, San Fernando, and Hawaii B. Dulao, Aringay. Nine commercially important finfish fry species were identified: milkfish, barracuda, therapon, mullet, goby, siganid, silversides, slipmouths, and spotted scat. Of the nine, five fry species were found to be present in all sampling sites. These were milkfish. barracudas, mullet, therapon and slipmouths. The fry of silversides, siganids, and goby, however, were found to be present only in Paraoir, Paratong and Darigayos. September 1995 appeared to be the peak season for the nine finfish fry in La Union as 36.8% of the total catch composition for the duration of the study was caught in this month alone. The other months which could be considered also peak seasons were August, September, and June in 1996 and May 1995. Siganid fry were found to be a predominant group with a total volume catch of 65.31% or 3/5 of the total finfish fry catch for the period. Most of the siganid fry were caught in Paraoir, Balaoan (Station 2) which was 85.77% of the total siganid catch in La Union. This was followed by milkfish fry. Almost 60% of the total goby fry was collected in Paratong, Bacnotan, which is a noted goby fishing ground. Correlation analysis on the relationship between the relative abundance of fry with the other parameter revealed a non-linear relationship. Salinity on the other hand has no significant relationship with relative abundance at P5 level of confidence
