Technico-economical caracterization of Alentejo sheep production systems

In spite of sheep production having been considered as one of the potentially competitive activities, both before the integration of Portugal into the European Union (EU), as well as during the adjustment phases of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP), there have been very few studies on this type of production, and in particular, about its technical and economical aspects. Based on five farms which represent the various sheep production systems in Alentejo, this article provides a technical characterisation of the lamb production systems, evaluates their economical profitability in 1991/92, and the evolution of this profitability under CAP reforms and the agricultural components of GATT agreement in 1995/96 and 2003/04. The results indicate that the continuous decrease in the prices and in the support policies do not have a very negative effect on the competitivity of the Alentejo's lamb meat. Apesar da producao ovina ter sido considerada como uma de entre as actividades produtivas potencialmente competitivas, antes da integracao de Portugal na Uniao Europeia (UE) e durante as fases de ajustamento da politica Agricola Comum (PAC), sao poucos os estudos realizados sobre este tipo de producao e, particularmente, sobre os seus aspectos tecnicos e economicos. Tendo por base cinco exploracoes de produtores representativos na producao ovina no Alentejo, neste artigo faz-se a caracterizacao tecnica dos sistemas de producao de borrego, avalia-se a sua rendibilidade economica em 1991/92, e a evolucao dessa rendibilidade no ambito das implicacoes decorrentes da nova PAC e da componente agricola do GATT, em 1995/96 e 2003/04. Os resultados indicam que os efeitos de diminuicoes continuas dos precos e dos niveis de apoio ao rendimento na competitividade do produto carne de borrego da regiao Alentejo nao sao muito negativos. Pode inclusivamente admitir-se a manutencao dos actuais niveis de rendibilidade e um contributo crescente da producao ovina para a rendibilidade economica e consequenteviabilidade das empresas
