In nature there is a characteristic large diversity between species as well as within species. Likewise, in domesticated species of animals, initially a large number of diverse animal breeds was developed. Diverse systems tend to be more stable. Unfortunately, biotic diversity in the area of animal production has been continually decreasing in the last decades. The main reasons are, besides reducing the number of breeds, also lack of environment preservation conciseness and non-sustainable use of natural resources. A number of governmental and non-governmental organisations and societies on global, regional and state level have been established. On different levels a number of documents and conventions have been adopted. Preserving the autochthonous breeds of domestic animals in Slovenia in the animal husbandry is one of them. Project has been going on since 1991. All the necessary steps for the protection of the endangered autochthonous breeds are included there: inventarisation, characterisation, statements about risk status and methods for taking care about endangered breeds. At present only in situ method of preservation is performed in Slovenia. Breeders of three species (sheep, pigs and hens) or six breeds (Jezersko-Solcava and Bovec sheep, Istrian and Bela krajina pramenka, Krskopolje pig and Styrian hen) are cooperating.
