Effect of genetic and non-genetic factors on milk composition in ewes of Improved Valachian and Tsigai breeds

The authors analysed the effect of genetic and non-genetic factors on the content of proteins (% P), fat (% F) and lactose (% L) in ewe milk of Improved Valachian (IV) and Tsigai (T) breeds. The authors used the data from milk efficiency control which are gathered in the computer centre of the State Breeding Institute in Zilina. After the initial treatment were the primary data of IV (n=4019 or 4021) and T ewes (n=1246 or 1247) analysed by means of mathematical and statistical programme package SAS, version 6.1, individually for each breed. The genetic and non-genetic factors were taken into account and in IV ewes were found %P=5.73, %F=8.15 and %L=4.98, in T ewes %P=5.71, %F=8.49 and %L=4.92. The authors used the least squares method (SAS-GLM method) and found out that the factors herd, father of ewes and control year influence the milk composition in IV breed most significantly (P0.001), with %F and %L also the age of ewes number of sucking lambs (P0.05-P0.001). The interval between lambing and 1st control measurement of milk as well as the lenght of milking period influence first of all %F. Factors herd and age of ewes influenced also the milk composition in T breed (P0.01 - 0.001) to a great extent. The effect of number of sucking lambs was nonsignificant in T breed compared with the IV breed. The effect of father was also lower (%P-ns, %F and %L - P0.01). Particularly the length of milking period was of significant importance out of concomitant variables in T ewes. The obtained data show that it is necessary to test and evaluate also the breeding rams according to the production and content of basic components in milk of daughters
