The properties of plant ferritin biosynthesis are presented. Ferritin is an iron storage protein which protects cells against toxic concentrations of ferrous ions. Plant ferritin biosyntheis is regulated at the transcriptional and translational level. It was suggested that the autoregulatory mechanisms of ferritin biosynthesis (mechanism of autorepression and derepression of mRNA specific for ferritin) at the translational level is dependent on iron concentration. In this paper we also report the N-terminal sequence analysis and present an explanatory hypotesis based on this analysis concerning the shortening of the polypeptide chain during post-translational editing of protein, and the consequences of this observation for biological functioning
