The effect of short-term and continual preventive application of Lactobacillus casei subsp. casei against E. coli for the actual acidity, concentration of organic acids in the digestive tract and colonization of the jejunum with E. coli 08:K88 in gnotobiotic piglets was investigated. In the first experiment at the short-term preventive application, the animals of the experimental group(L-E) at tha age of 2, 3 and 4 days were inoculated with Lactobacillus casei subsp. casei. In the second experiment at the continual application, the group L-E was inoculated with L. casei daily from day 2 to 10 of the animal life. At the age of 5 days, piglets of both groups were inoculated with E. coli 08:K88. Each inoculum contained 1 x 10/8/germs in 1 ml and it was applied once a day. After short-term application of L. casei to the experimental group L-E,there was a significantly higher pH of the jejunum content(p0.05), lower concentration of lactic and acetic acids in the jejunum and ileum, while the inhibitory effect of L. casei to the adhesion of E. coli on the jejunum mucosa was not pronounced. At the continual preventive application of L. casei to the experimental group L-E, there was a predominantly lower pH of the digestive tract, higher concentration of lactic and acetic acids in the jejunum and ileum content and lower concretation of butyric acid with a significant difference in the ileum (p0.05). At the continual preventive application of L. casei to the 10-day-old animals, the number of E. coli 08:K88 adhered to the jejunummucosa in gnotobiotic piglets of the group L-E (5.6 log 10. cubic cm). The continual preventive application of L. casei against E. coli had a positive effect on production of lactic and acetic acids and actual acidity in the digestive tract of gnotobiotic piglets; and in comparison with the controls, significantly decreased the number of E. coli colonizing the jejunum
