The appreciation of the central waste dump at Ceske Libchavy, district Usti nad Orlici, on the environment [Czech Republic]

For the purposes of landfilling of solid wastes, a locality in Libchavy depression was selected. The locality is reliably isolated from an aquifer in the bedrock syncline (downfold) by impermeable layers. However, the importance of the dump together with public enquiries initiated an implementation of a monitoring project, which included an observation of quality of water, atmosphere, soil layers and forest land. The project, co-ordinated by the Department for Monitoring of the Environment (Institute for Hydrodynamics of the Czech Academy of Science), was launched one year (in 1995) before the dump was put into the operation. Results from the pre-operation period and from further two years (1996, 1997) when the dump was already in the operation show that the environment is well protected against possible risks posed by the dump
