Sugar plant efficiency analysis by the first and second law of thermodynamics
1995
Goel, D.K. (National Federation of Coop, New Delhi (India) Sugar Factories Ltd.)
Energy system of a standard 2500 TCD cane sugar plant producing plantation white sugar has been analyzed by the first and second law of thermodynamics. The results for the complete plant as well as various subsystems such as boilers, prime movers, evaporator have been compared for different steam parameters. The first law analysis gives the impression that the efficiency of the complete plant is about 24 percent, whereas the second law analysis shows that the rational efficiency is only about 12 to 13 percent. Factories aiming for surplus power for outside sale should consider installation of electric drive at the mill and steam pressure of 45 ATA and above.
