Fishery activities and catch in Rajjaprabha Reservoir, Surat Thani Province were investigated by collection and analysis of historical data from available documents and a one-year survey conducted from July 1993-May 1994. The results show that the reservoir received an average inflow of 2,772 million cubic m/year from 1964-1993; and retained an average water level of + 73.89 m MSL over a seven-year period (1987-1993). The range of the retained water fluctuated from 3.25-8.07 m/year. The average rainfall from 1986-1994 was 3,009 mm/year. The reservoir was around 184 square km in area. There were 97 households engaged in fisheries activities in the reservoir using five types of gear, the most commonly used being gillnet, elastic mechanical harpoon and longline. The average catch was 12.45 kg/fisherman/day which brought an average income of 174.6 Baht/fishing day. The majority of the fishermen (90.94 percent) migrated from the Northeast and Southern regions of the country. The maximum fish catch was found on the third year after it retained water; catch ratio was 6.04 kg/rai/year or 2,238 kg/fisherman/year. Most of the species caught belonged to the carps group. From the total catch, 6.14 percent was used by the households, the rest was sold fresh. A large portion of the catch that was sold (84.27 percent) was transported and consumed by people in urban centers, which are far from the reservoir area. The third year (1988) was also the time were the number of fishermen reach 200, up from 75 in the second year. In the next two year, the number further increased to 280 but catch (kg/rai/year) declined from 6.04 to 4.53. The succeeding years saw further slight declines in catch, although this has levelled off to around 3.6 to nearly 4 over the past four years.
