Community structure of fish and their relation to food items in the mangrove area, Ranong province

Fish community in mangrove area, Kapur District, Ranong Province was studied during January 1994-January 1995. Fish were collected every month during night time by using push net with mesh size at cod end 1.5 cm. A total of 38,775 specimens from three stations representing 49 families which comprised of 104 species, 17 genus and 2 families of fish were found in this area. This area has high diversity index with the average value 1.9710 and equitability index 0.4514. The fish abundance was found maximum during the beginning and the end of Southwest monsoon season which is during May and September to November. The most abundant of economic fish species was numerically Stolephorus indicus 7 percent and uneconomic fish species were Leiognathus brevirostris 28 percent, Ambassis vachellii 16 percent, L. splendens 13 percent and Atherinomorus duodecimalis 11 percent. Sampling of the dominant species of fish all 39 species with a total number of 1,536 specimen were analysed for the stomach content. The frequency occurrence of 17 categories of food items were recorded from the stomach of fish. The selected fish had the size range between 4.4-13.3 cm. The food diet of fish community in mangrove area was composed of various kinds of benthos, plankton, detritus. and conglomerates. The percent frequency occurrence of the main food items of these fish were constituted of copepods 40 percent, detritus 40 percent, polychaetes 18 percent shrimp 17 percent crab 19 and fish 18 percent.
