Effects of growth retardant paclobutrazol and plant density were studies in dry season 1990, at Kasetsart University experimental field, Kamphaeng Saen Campus, Nakorn Pathom, using soybean cv. SJ.5. Combinations of applications at 2 rates (500 and 750 g.ai./1,200 litre of water/ha) and at 2 stages of growth (R2 and R4) were compared with non-treated control and plant densities studied were 200,000 and 400,000 plants/ha. Five x 2 factorial in Randomized Complete Block Design with 4 replications was employed in this study. Paclobutrazol reduced plant height and increased specific leaf weight (SLW) at 85 days after planting (DAP). Paclobutrazol applied at growth stage R2 increased reproductive abortion and reduced pod number per plant, but with the yield compensation through seed weight, yield per unit area was not significantly affected. Flowering period was extended 3.5-4.2 days by both rates of paclobutrazol applied at growth stage R4 without any changes in flower number per plant, percent reproductive abortion, pods per plant and yield. Seed quality was not affected by paclobutrazol but was found slightly lower in plants grown at 200,000 plants/ha. Plant density at 400,000 plants/ha gave a higher seed yield than the density of 200,000 plants/ha and there was no interaction between plant density and paclobutrazol applications in this study.
