Sugarcane selection 2 for smut resistance lines

42 clones derived from 87-2-966 * L60-25 and 30 clones derived from Q83 which were regenerated from tissue culture and treated with various doses of gamma radiation were tested in 1992 Selection 2 Trial. The purpose of the trial was to select resistant clunes which also have good agronomic traits. The RCB was used with 2 replications. The inoculation was performed using dipping technique at a spore suspension of 5*10*[6) spores/ml for only one replicate. 87.5 % of tested clones showed smut symptom in the field. The percentage of infected stalk of each clones was in a range of 0.0-100.0 % and a number of whips was in a range of 0-52 whips. Agronomic characters were also studied in each clone. From smut evaluation and agronomic data, 23 clones were selected for further study.
