Effect of soil salinity on moisture deficit and yield irrigated wheat

Presence of salts in the root zone affects the availability of water from the soil to the plants, and ultimately affects the crop yield. Most of the yield decrease is associated with a decrease in transpiration due to soil salinity which is responsible for the development of osmotic potential retarding the extraction of water from the soil solution by plants. In this study efforts made to see the extent of salinity on non-availability of water to the plants under field conditions. The first objective of study was to observe the movement of salts within the root zone profile throughout the growth season of wheat crop i.e. movement of salts under irrigation and evapotranspiration regimes. A model was developed to predict to the soil moisture balance and deficit moisture caused by salinity stress throughout the growth season by using three different root water uptake patterns. A good agreement was observed between the calculated and observed values in slightly saline soils but in highly saline plots the values of observed moisture content were higher than the calculated values. An overall non-linear relationship was estimated between moisture content and salt concentration.
