Aflatoxin producing ability of Aspergillus flavus isolated from peanut field soil

Ability of A. flavus to produce aflatoxin was studies by taking soil samples from peanut field during flowering, pegging to pod development and harvesting stages. A fungus isolation, identification and aflatoxin producing test had been done in the laboratory conditions. There were 149, 177, and 275 colonies of A. flavus per gram of soil during flowering, pegging-pod development and harvesting stage respectively. The ability of aflatoxin production, at flowering stage, there was 33 isolates out of 82 isolates (42 percent) those were able to produce aflatoxin. The amount of toxin was ranges 31 - 21425 micro g/kg. At pegging to pod development stage, 57 from 126 isolates (42.9 percent) were able to produce the toxin with range of 16-44681 micro g/kg. At harvesting stage, only 54 isolates from 142 isolates (40.1 percent) those were also able to produce aflatoxin with range of 119-58188 micro g/kg.
