[Genus Medicago L. (Fabaceae) in flora of Ukraine]

The up-to-date taxonomic status of the genera Medicago and Trigonella in Uraine's flora is considered. The purpose of the present study is to solve problem of their taxonomic structure and phylogeny. The degree of evolutional development are revealed as well as their genetic centers of origin. A scheme of the genus Medicago L. is built. A synthetic system of Medicago is proposed. A method is developed and criteria are defined for species identification in the system of the State Committee on Variety Trial and the Ukrainian State Seed Inspection. For the first time morphometric characteristics of Medicago's pollen are studied. By use of an original technique electrophoretic spectra of seed storage proteins are obtained. Protein phenotypes are used as diagnostic traits for differentiating the genera and clarifying the taxonomic structure of the genus Medicago
