Nitrogen fertilization is of great agricultural and environmental importance. The determination of real crop needs for this element is therefore essential. A new method for the determination of plant nitrogen status based on chlorophyll content has been developed and successfully applied in various crops. The objective of the present study was to examine if and to which extent chlorophyll content can be used as an indicator of nitrogen status of young sugar beet plants, and furthermore, what is the role of the form of supplied nitrogen and plant genotype. Three sugar beet genotypes (Dana, Delta and NS Hy-11) were grown in water cultures, in the presence of different concentrations of either ammonium - or nitrate-N. A high positive correlation between chlorophyll a+b and N content in leaves, regardless of the nitrogen form, suggests that chlorophyll content is a reliable indicator of nitrogen status in young sugar beets.
