The objective of this paper is to give an answer to some questions on the extent of the accumulation of toxic elements cadmium and chromium in vegetative organs of alfalfa and lettuce, from natural sources, as well as from added salts of these elements in the soils of different pH values. Apart from this, there was studied the effect of chemical amelioration (liming and manuring) on the content of Cd and Cr in plants, as well as the mobility of these elements in soil. The investigation was carried out on the two types of soil, pseudogley (pH 3.97) and chernozem (pH 6.88). It has been noticed that the mobility of Cd in much higher in acid soils than neutral ones. The Cd mobility reflects itself on the lower yield of alfalfa and lettuce and in the increased content of Cd in these plants if they are grown on pseudogley. On the opposite Cr is more mobile in neutral soils. Alfalfa and lettuce grown on chernozem with Cr added have had a lower yield and higher content of Cr than when grown on pseudogley.
