Five alfalfa genotypes were planted at experimental field. Yields of dry matter were measured in the 1st, 2nd and 3rd year of alfalfa growing as well as for the whole experiment period. The genotypes Syn.II, NS Banat, ZMS II and Orca were the best regarding the total 3-year yield of dry matter. Their yields were 49.25 t/ha, 48.54 t/ha and 48.23 t/ha, respectively. The genotypes Syn. III, Du Puits and Orca stood out for the contents of crude proteins in stems and leaves. From rosette stage to the beginning of flowering, the content of crude proteins decreased while the content of crude cellulose increased in both, alfalfa stems and leaves. In the course of the ontogenetic development of alfalfa changes in the contents of crude proteins and crude cellulose were larger in stems than in leaves. The genotype NS Banat ZMS II had the lowest content of crude proteins and crude cellulose in the stem as well as the lowest content of crude proteins and the highest content of crude cellulose in the leaf. The genotypes Syn. III and Orca had the highest contents of crude cellulose in the stem and the highest contents of crude cellulose in the leaf. The genotypes Syn. III, Du Puits and Orca, which had highest crude cellulose contents in the stem, also had highest crude protein contents in the stem.
