The identification of drought resistant traits of maize (Zea mays L.) in progeny with exotic germplasm

Genetic variability, as well as, genetic and phenotypic correlations between grain yield and traits which are parameters of maize response to drought stress were observed in the present study. The experiment with top-cross progenies of both, the population DTP-A (with 75% of exotic germplasm) and the inbred line ILB84, carried out in different environments, was set up according to the Nested design. Beside correlations, estimates of heritability and parameters of variability were determined. The selection index, encompassing grain yield, leaf senescence and leaf moisture content at harvest, was established on the basis of individual estimates departure from population mean only for one location, where impacts of drought were the most pronounced. Weak and insignificant genetic correlations between grain yield and anthesis-silking interval (ASI-days) were detected. The strongest interrelation between grain yield and observed secondary traits and yield components was established for leaf senescence. The selection index will be used to select families for further breeding for higher tolarance to drought, while the second subpopulation will be derived on the basis of grain yield obtained in these families.
