Phytophthora cryptogea as a cause of root rot of lettuce grown in a nutrient film technique system
1999
Jamart, G. (Agricultural Research Centre, Merelbeke (Belgium). Dept. of Crop Protection)
In January 1998, lettuce plants showing severe root rot symptoms were sampled from a commercial grower who used a NPT irrigation system. From the necrotic roots a Phytophthora sp. was isolated. Pathogenicity tests were conducted under hydroponic conditions in a greenhouse with two lettuce species. Reisolation of the fungus from roots and stems of infected plants confirmed pathogenicity. The fungus was identified as Phytophthora cryptogea Pethybr. & Lafferty. This is the first report of Phytophthora cryptogea as a root pathogen in cultivated lettuce in Belgium and in Europe.
