The metal contents (mg/kg dry matter) in plants fall within the range of: Cd - 0.04 - 1.62; Cu - 4.0 - 14.8; Mn - 36.0 - 160; Ni - 0.4 - 2.4; Pb - 1.6 - 27.6; Zn - 18.5 - 41.5. In the majority of the samples As is bellow the detection limit. Moving away from the smelter in eastern direction the metal content in plants become lower. The values obtained for Cu, Mn, Ni, and Zn correspond to the typical ranges for fodders in Bulgaria. Pb is most of the samples and Cd in some of them are above the permissible levels. It is most likely that the high level of heavy metals in plants are predominantly due to direct air pollution of plant surfaces because of the smelter activity.
