This paper presents a choice of important results of tests including more than 100 tractors carried out by the Swiss Research Institute for Agricultural Economics and Engineering. In view of tighter regulations on exhaust gas emissions also for tractor engines, more efforts will be needed to optimise the combustion process. Electronics will play a major part. There have already been some developments in this field: electric stopping device, electronic engine speed recording and control. Further steps will follow in order to make tractor engines still cleaner, more quiet and economical. They include electronic injection start control and injection quantity control. For its clear advantages as regards future environmental charges, the exhaust gas turbocharger will be part of the regular equipment of new tractors
