Conservatory orchards are gold mines for breeders | Le verger conservatoire, une mine d'or pour les hybrideurs

Corbaz, R. (Arboretum national d'Aubonne, Prangins (Switzerland))
Standard-size fruit trees planted since 1980 in the National Arboretum of Aubonne (Vaud, Switzerland) are now wellgrown and give fruits. It is possible to give up any phytosanitary treatment without creating dangerous situations. The behaviour of different local fruit varieties against common diseases was observed during three years. A high resistance degree against scab was noted in a few local apple varieties, a weak susceptibility to shot hole in different cherry varieties and a complete resistance in four plum varieties against bladder plums. These abilities and also other agronomical and genetical properties (Late bursting of the leaves, particular ripening period, frost or rain resistance) detected in the collection should induce breeders to use some of these varieties as generators in future crosses, so new rustic breeding lines could be obtained and genetical diversity maintained. Conservatory orchards are clearly more than simple patrimony safe guards.
