Total content of selected contaminants in soil is determined to evaluate soil contamination linked with old environmental loads as a result of economic activities. The evaluation is based on the methodology: Criteria of Soil and Groundwater Contamination. As this parameter is not telling enough for environmental risk assessment, for risk analyses, particularly where the subsoil is contaminated by organic contaminants (petroleum products), we recommend to determine these contaminants also in water extract when the evaluation is made pursuant to Regulation No. 338/97. Our hitherto results confirm the existence of a functional relationship between contaminant content in soil and that in water extract. Hence, we recommend to determine contaminant concentration also in water extract in connection with the assessment of environmental risk in soils contaminated by petroleum products.
