The prices of agricultural products, material and energy have considerably increased in the Czech Republic in the nineties. The input prices followed the inflation and increased by more than 250 % in comparison with 1989, while the agricultural products prices have increased only by 70 %. The labour costs also rose by about 250 % (the average month wage in agriculture was 3,550 CZK in 1989 and 9,130 CZK in 1998). The agriculture development was considerably affected by inflation, which increased by 270 % within the observed period. The cattle rearing was also affected by economical and technological changes. Dairy cows numbers dropped from 1,247,000 in 1989 to 640,000 in 1999. The annual average milk yield increased by 26 % and in 1999, it exceeded 5,000 L. Nevertheless, the total amount of produced milk decreased by about 30 %. The labour productivity has significantly increased as modern working processes and housing systems were introduced. In 1989, only 9 % of cows were housed in free stables, while in 1999, it was already 43 %.
