[Adaptation of the breed Merinolandschaf to extensive conditions]

Merinolandschaf breed appears to fit into marginal production environments in the Czech Republic. The adaptability to extensive year-round grazing management with minimum shepherding, housing and supplementation has been tested during four years on 300-ewe flock imported from Southern Germany. Ewes would not become pregnant until their liveweight reaches 40 kg, however maiden ewes of such weight conceive successfully at 9th month of age. Appropriate body weight according to the breed standard is not achieved until 3 years of age. However, the twinning percentage is high even at first birth and increasing from 18 to 50.6 and 70 % during 4 years. Fertility rate increases from 109 to 135, 150 and 163 %. Lamb weight at 100 days varies widely (15.5-25.1 kg), depending on season, ewe age and litter size.
