After a new reservoir filled, the riverine ichthyofauna undergoes a characteristic succession. Typical riverine species are mainly eliminated and a limited number of ubiquitous ecologically plastic species develop abundant populations. The diversity of fish fry communities was investigated in two reservoirs and three rivers in the Czech Republic. The sampling stations covered the whole stretch from metarithron to metapotamon in Elbe and Luznice Rivers. The following hypothesis was tested: The average diversity of fry communities should be higher in rivers compared to reservoirs. Statistically significant difference was found between reservoirs and rivers in the number of fish species.
