Owner-reported behaviour of dogs in the Czech Republic

The aim of this study was to extend our knowledge of animal behaviour in Czech households. We used a questionnaire survey and obtained data on 305 dogs. Results show that dogs are mostly kept in at least two-person households (56.3 %). Children are in 38.4 % of the dog-owning families. Our results reveal the contact of these companion dogs with people of the household has become very close. The bond of humans and dogs, however, remains difficult to interpret for dog owners seemingly because of its complexity. This becomes apparent with owner interpretations of dog behaviour, especially their obedience/disobedience, which are often anthropomorphic. This is especially the case when interpretations of various types of aggression are perceived as negative. These results are of special importance for veterinarians, especially those who would work with clients to offer explanations of undesirable behaviours and design therapies for altering these behaviours.
