The main diseases of red clover and alfalfa in the Czech Republic

The most serious fungal diseases of red clover in the Czech Republic are of the root-rot complex. The primary causal agents are fungi of the genus Fusarium. Species most often occurring are F. avenaceum, F. culmorum, F. solani a F. oxysporum. Other very important disease is sclerotinia crown and root rot caused by Sclerotinia trifoliorum. The most frequently mildew on red clover is powdery mildew caused by Erysiphe trifolii. Tetraploid varieties are more susceptible than diploid materials. The major disease of alfalfa is tracheal wilt. Causal pathogens are Fusarium oxysporum, Verticillium albo-atrum and Clavibacter michiganense pv. insidiosum.
