Extensive laboratory investigations carried out in England and Wales in 1974 through 1997 demonstrated bovine tuberculosis in 19.6 % of the 21,545 tested badgers. Mycobacterium intracellulare (serotype 9) was isolated from hepatic milliary caseous nodules of one of the twelve badgers tested in the Czech Republic in the last five years. Microscopic lesions indicative of tuberculosis were found in the liver of another animal.
