The kura clover (Trifolium ambiguum M. Bieb.) symbiotic N2 fixation activity and quality
2001
Selge, A. | Keres, I. (Estonian Agricultural Univ., Tartu (Estonia). Dept. of Grassland Science and Botany)
during the first experimental year a very slow establishment of kura clover (sown with perennial ryegrass9 was observed: kura clover gave up to 7 per cent of the total DM yield in the seeding year. Kura clover (Trifolium ambiguum M. Bieb) showed almost the same range of N2 fixation activity and correlation with nodules characteristics as white clover cultivar. The high correlation between nitrogen fixation activity and nodules total weight was found. The Rhizobium strains developed in Estonia and widely used for white and red clover, proved to be inappropriate for kura clover because of the fact that nodulation and N2 fixation was not observed. The feeding value of kura clover (in the stems-formation stage) is characterised by a low fibre content: the average neutral detergent fibre (NDF) and the acid detergent fibre (ADF) in the DM yield formed 23,5 per cent and 13,7 per cent respectively. The digestible dry matter intake and the relative feed value were higher comparing with white clover stands
