Fertilization of lucerne flowers at Jogeva Plant Breeding Institute
2000
Bender, A. (Jogeva Plant Breeding Inst., Jogeva (Estonia))
In the years 1983, 1985, 1986, 1988...1990 field trials were carried out at the Jogeva Plant Breeding Institute in order to study the fertilization of lucerne flowers of 134 different varieties, among them 63 varieties of lucerne (Medicago sativa L.), 68 varieties of bastard lucerne (Medicago varia Mart.), 2 varieties of sickle lucerne (Medicago falcata L.) and 1 variety of Nordic lucerne (Medicago borealis Grossh.). The origin of varieties was as following: Soviet Union-59, USA-24, France-11, Sweden-9, England-5, Hungary-5, Canada-3, Romania-3, Denmark-2, China-2, Yugoslavia-2, Turkey-1, Portugal-1, Finlaand-1, Argentina-1, Spain-1. Trial variants were as following: control (K), artifical tripping by hand manipulation (KT), autotripping under isolation (ATI), artificial tripping before isolating (KTI). On the basis of the trial results of the control variant (K) and of the visual evaluation of the actual seed yield, it can be stated that the variety 'Jogeva 118' has the highestfertility indices. Only in the year, when weather conditions during flowering were especially favourable, the varieties 'Sv-0640', 'Kamalinskaja 550' and 'Lada' were superior to the variety 'Jogeva 118' in open-pollination.Altough artifical tripping increased the number of pods, it also increased the number of pods, it also increased the share of puny seeds in the yield and reduced the number of seeds in the pod. Therefore, the fertility calculated on the basis of normally developed seeds was lower than that of the control variant
